Wippien VPN problem/wrong ip being sent 17-04-2008 22:34
Hello all,

I'm experiencing troubles in establishing VPN connections with a number of my contacts, whereas with others it works flawlessly. I've wrestled with this problem for the last couple of days and I've played around with every possibly relevant setting - to no avail. It seems I am only able to establish the VPN connection to the one contact which happens to be running Windows XP. I can't connect to either of the other two who are running Windows Vista. I don't know whether this is a coincidence or if Wippien has compatibility issues with Windows Vista.

However, I had a look in the startup/VPN communication log, and I spotted something which I thought might lie at the root of the problem. At intervals, there are lines similar to this one:

Sending LINK packet to 10.0.0.2(52259)

I don't know the particulars in regards to the inner workings of Wippien, but my reasoning is that one of my contact's computers must have identified itself as 10.0.0.2 to the mediator server, and then the mediator server has sent that address on to me, and my Wippien client tries to establish a VPN connection with the machine at that address. Now, the problem is, obviously, that on my network, there is no 10.0.0.2. So my temporary deduction is that the machine on the other end (and possibly mine too) must have identified itself with the wrong IP to the mediator servers, and thus hindered a connection from being established. Could this possible be the case? If so, how would I go on about fixing it?

I can add that we are four persons who are tryign to establish a private network. Three run Vista and one Windows XP. All three are able to connect the XP computer, but not to eachother.

Thanks for your attention. Hope you can help.

Regards,
André

Andre,

10.0.0.2 is not relevant. That is just one of IPs. If, by any chance, 10.0.0.2 *is* on your network this would be shortest route. There's no way for Wippien to know that unless he tries.

So, let's get back to Vista issue. Do they run it as Administrator? Do they connect with anyone? Do their IP address blink, is always blue or always black?

I appreciate the quick response.

I have tried running the program as Administrator and I've also tried running it in XP compatibility mode. When I fire it up, the IP addresses of all three contacts (and my own) are initially blue, and all of them start blinking, but my own entry and the XP-contact turns black after a few seconds usually and the VPN connection is established to the latter. The other two Vista contacts have tried the exact same thing on their computers, but they are experiencing the same problem - only being able to establish a VPN connection to the contact running Windows XP.

Also, it seems Wippien is periodically retrying to establish the VPN connection, because at intervals, the IP addresses of the Vista contacts start blinking again.

André

Andre,

this is some sort of firewall issue. Blinking blue and not turning into black means that they are unable to reach each other, for unknown reason.

Can you try, just for a test, to lower any shields you have, including integrated Windows firewall or ZoneAlarm or anything like that?

I thought about that, but the only firewall I've got is the one that ships natively with Windows Vista. I've tried 1) adding the Wippien virtual network adapter to the exception list and 2) I've tried disabling the firewall altogether. Neither configuration made any change to the situation.

Is there any chance you would be able to deduce the reason for the problem if you saw the startup/VPN connection log? I'm disinclined to upload it somewhere public, but if you're willing to have a look at it, I'd be more than happy to send it to you. Thanks.

Andre,

can you add kreso-at-wippien-dot-com to your contact list? We can try to see about it over the weekend.
