Access remote machine via \\servername? 08-04-2008 15:40
I am able to access a remote machine via \servername when the client is running XP. When client is running Vista, I can only access it via right-click-Explore on the contacts list of Wippien.

Is it possible to access remote machines via \name on Vista as is possible on XP?

Thanks!

Yes, but this isn't WIppien issue. Same would happen on LAN.

I think you should disable NTLM version 2 (or something like that). Google a bit - and good luck :)

this is what i was talking about for the hosts file.

in vista:
1.) Browse to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories
2.) Right click "Notepad" and select "Run as administrator"
3.) Click "Continue" on the UAC prompt
4.) Click File -> Open
5.) type in "%windir%\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts" and click "Open"
8.) add the line "<servers_ip_address><tab><servers_name>" ex "5.0.0.1 tacobell"
9.) and close Notepad. Save when prompted.

in xp:
1.) click on your start menu and hit run
2.) type in "notepad %windir%\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts"
3.) add the line "<servers_ip_address><tab><servers_name>" ex "5.0.0.1 tacobell"
4.) and close Notepad. Save when prompted.

now wait a minute for it to parse the entries and update; then type in
"\tacobell" to reach that server

NOTE: make sure to not touch the line stating "127.0.0.1 localhost" or you will run into a world of troublewink.gif
